MNT4   Apply communication skills in the counseling process, to integrate the nutritional needs of patients/clients with complex medical conditions.

Program Outcomes

The DIP identified appropriate measures for ongoing assessment of each of the program’s goals. The qualitative and/or quantitative outcome data obtained from internal and external stakeholders is gathered and analyzed in a timely fashion. Some of the graduate performance measures include: program completion, graduate employment, RD pass rate, graduate satisfaction, participation in community services, research activities and commitment to lifelong learning.

Specifically, graduates of the program will be eligible to sit for the national certification examination for the registered dietitian and for the PR licensure exam. Outcome data demonstrate graduates have a high passage rate, at least 90%, on the PR licensure exam, passage of which is required to practice in Puerto Rico as a professional in nutrition and dietetics. The program pass rate of the RD exam is currently less than 80% for the first takers.

Steps to become a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN)

Include:

  • Completing Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) accredited Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD).
  • Completing an ACEND accredited supervised practice program called a Dietetic Internship (DI) (consisting of a minimum of 1000 hours).
  • Passing a national examination administered by Pearson Vue under the guidance of the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR). CDR has mandated that beginning January 1, 2024, a minimum of a graduate degree will be required to sit for the RDN Exam. In addition, RDNs must complete continuing professional educational requirements to maintain registration (75 hours/5 years) and many states require that RDNs be licensed or certified.

New Graduate Degree Requirement Effective January 1, 2024

The Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) is the credentialing agency responsible for administering the Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) exam. Effective January 1, 2024, the CDR will require a minimum of a master’s degree to be eligible to take the credentialing exam to become a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN). In order to be approved for registration examination eligibility with a bachelor’s degree, an individual must meet all eligibility requirements and be submitted into CDR’s Registration Eligibility Processing System (REPS) before 12:00 midnight Central Time, December 31, 2023. For more information about this requirement visit CDR’s website: https://www.cdrnet.org/graduatedegree.

In addition, CDR requires that individuals complete coursework and supervised practice in program(s) accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND).  Graduates who successfully complete the ACEND-accredited Dietetic Internship Program at University of Puerto Rico are eligible to apply to take the CDR credentialing exam to become an RDN.  Nevertheless, effective January 1, 2024 candidates must complete a graduate degree to be eligible to apply for the CDR credentialing exam to become an RDN.

In most states, graduates also must obtain licensure or certification to practice. For more information about state licensure requirements visit: https://www.cdrnet.org/state-licensure.

In order to practice the profession in Puerto Rico, it is necessary to obtain the RDN exam or the LND local examination and become an active member of the College of Nutritionists and Dietitians of the Puerto Rico. Since 2016, candidates who present evidence they approved the Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) Examination are exempt from taking the local LND examination, and may request a license in Puerto Rico.
